How to handle “ref” of MUI component props in our components
When working with TypeScript and Material-UI (MUI) components, you may come across the need to handle the “ref” prop of MUI components in your own custom components. This can be a bit tricky as MUI components have their own specific way of handling refs. In this blog post, we will explore different solutions to handle the “ref” prop of MUI component props in our components.
Solution 1: Using forwardRef
The first solution involves using the forwardRef
function provided by React to forward the ref from our custom component to the MUI component. Here’s an example:
{`import React, { forwardRef } from 'react';
import { TextField } from '@mui/material';
const CustomTextField = forwardRef((props, ref) => {
return ;
});
export default CustomTextField;`}
In this example, we create a custom component called CustomTextField
that wraps the MUI TextField
component. We use the forwardRef
function to forward the ref from our custom component to the underlying MUI component. This allows us to access the ref of the MUI component in our custom component.
Solution 2: Using createRef
If you prefer not to use the forwardRef
function, you can also manually create a ref using the createRef
function provided by React. Here’s an example:
{`import React, { createRef } from 'react';
import { TextField } from '@mui/material';
const CustomTextField = (props) => {
const ref = createRef();
return ;
};
export default CustomTextField;`}
In this example, we create a ref using the createRef
function and assign it to a variable called ref
. We then pass this ref to the MUI TextField
component using the ref
prop. This allows us to access the ref of the MUI component in our custom component.
Solution 3: Using useRef
Another option is to use the useRef
hook provided by React. This hook allows us to create a ref that persists across re-renders. Here’s an example:
{`import React, { useRef } from 'react';
import { TextField } from '@mui/material';
const CustomTextField = (props) => {
const ref = useRef();
return ;
};
export default CustomTextField;`}
In this example, we use the useRef
hook to create a ref and assign it to a variable called ref
. We then pass this ref to the MUI TextField
component using the ref
prop. This allows us to access the ref of the MUI component in our custom component.
These are three different solutions to handle the “ref” prop of MUI component props in our components. Choose the one that best fits your needs and coding style. Happy coding!
